Commons Natural Area
The Commons Natural Area encompasses over 480 acres of parkland, woodland, wetland conservation areas, and hiking and biking trails. As part of the Grand Traverse Commons Redevelopment District, the natural area was previously property of the the former State Psychiatric Hospital. Now a popular recreation destination, the Commons has several miles of unpaved trails for hiking, biking, nature watching and cross-country skiing. The trails wind through wooded hillsides, meadows, wetlands, and along streams. A wide and accessible path passes through the Botanic Garden at the Historic Barns Park.
Note: Not all sections of each trail are approved for every activity listed for the trail as a whole. Please click on individual trail sections to see approved activities for that section.
