The trail starts where the agricultural fields meet the forest, and ends at a sand and cobble beach along East Grand Traverse Bay. The steep footpath descends the wooded hillside, passes through lowland forest and sand foredunes, and ends at the 2,583 feet of Great Lakes shoreline.
The coastal zone and lakeshore are sensitive areas, home to several endangered plant species. Vehicular access to the lowland and beach area is prohibited; only pedestrian access is permitted.
