Sleeping Bear Dunes - Alligator Hill Trail
The Alligator Hill Trail has great views of Lake Michigan and Glen Lake and several miles of wide and well-marked trails. Three trail loops wind through the woods and over the hills between Big and Little Glen Lake and Lake Michigan. The trails are wide and well-marked.
The first loop (the Easy Trail) is the most popular for hiking and includes the Islands Lookout at the top of Alligator Hill. The 1.5 miles from the Stocking Road trailhead to the Islands Lookout the trail is uphill through Maple-Beech forest. The hike up is rewarded with panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands. From the Islands Lookout, there is a spur (out-and-back trail) that leads through tall pine forest to the Big Glen Lake Lookout. The Intermediate and Advanced Trail are used more by nordic skiers. Check out MichiganTrailMaps.com for more trail information and a detailed map.
A Park Pass is required for all trail use within the Lakeshore (Fee Information).
Note: Not all sections of each trail are approved for every activity listed for the trail as a whole. Please click on individual trail sections to see approved activities for that section.
